CD's:
*** Duke Ellington - Neatwork The Alternative Takes In Chronological Order V.5
1936-37 - Austria CD - This series was meant to fill in the holes in the French
Chronological Classics series with everything discovered after that series was
released. Caveat: Everything here is on the 2 Mosaic box sets, but if you don't want to
spend around $400 on the boxes...! In "like new" condition, this includes 25 tracks;
alternate takes of Diga Diga Doo, Caravan, Stompy Jones, I've Got To Be A Rug
Cutter, New Birmingham Breakdown, Azure, Foolin' myself & more. From my
personal collection, in superb condition. Neatwork Austria 940429. $14.99
*** Duke Ellington - Neatwork The Alternative Takes In Chronological Order V.6
1937-38 - Austria CD - This series was meant to fill in the holes in the French
Chronological Classics series with everything discovered after that series was
released. From my personal collection, in superb condition. Neatwork Austria
940429. $14.99
*** Duke Ellington - The Great Ellington Units - MHS edition of the out
of print 1940-41 RCA small group recordings cd. Recordings are under the
names of Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart & Barney Bigard; but all are
Ellington small groups, all but 2 songs with Duke on Piano. Includes Day
Dream, Good Queen Bess, Subtle Slew, Poor Bubber, Squaty Roo, Things
Ain't What They Used To Be & more. 22 songs. MHS 43184. $7.99
*** Duke Ellington - Vintage Performances (UK issue) - 16 songs, a
couple of which were hard to find until the recent box sets. Black
beauty, Stormy Weather, Rockin' in Rhythm, Bundle Of Blues, Awful Sad,
East St Louis Toodle-OO, Black & Tan, more. This really is a superb
starter collection for someone who has little early Ellington. Very nice
sound quality also for a 1990 master. This has been treated with the
Audioprism green pen for sound quality. Limelight/Decca UK 05922. $9.99
*** Duke Ellington - Braggin' in Brass: The Immortal 1938 Year (2 cd's)
- Out of print 32 song set includes a good portion of DE's 1938 output.
Includes a remake of Black & Tan Fantasy, Lost in Meditation, Gal From
Joe's, Skrontch, Rose Of The Rio grande, Pyramid, Prelude To A Kiss, Hip
Chic, Blue Light 92 takes), Boy meets Horn & more. This has been treated
with the Audioprism Green Pen for sound quality. CBS 44395. $9.99
*** Duke Ellington - Greatest Hits - I've never been 100% certain what
this one was sourced from, but as it has several tracks from the 50's
Duke & Rosemary Clooney album & is on CBS I suspect it's 50's & 60's CBS
recordings. Clooney tracks includes I let A Song Go Out Of My Heart,
Sophisticated Lady, & I'm Checkin' Out Goombye; + instrumentals of
Solitude, Mood Indigo, Jeep's Blues, Prelude To A kiss, Satin Doll & 2
more. CBS SP 21512. $5.99
*** Duke Ellington - Live In Warsaw (Sealed Switzerland issue) -
Recently released & somewhat hard to find 1971 concert, with 8 "bonus
tracks" from a 3/4/58 California Air Force base date. 1971 includes I'm
Beginning To See The light, Things Ain't What They Used To Be, Hello
Dolly, La Plus Belle Africaine, Satin Doll, Lotus Blossom & more; 1958
includes Blues in Orbit, Beer Barrel Polka!!, Caravan & more. Gambit
Switzerland 693238. $13.99
*** Duke Ellington - Cotton Club 1938 Volumes 1 & 2 (Netherlands issue)
- From the Masters Music collector's label; i believe this was the first
cd release of the 1938 acetates, & until the recent Storyville remaster
was also the best sounding version I was aware of. 24 songs, many with
Ivy Anderson: Rose Room, The Gal From Joe's, Dinah, On The Sunny Side Of
The Street, Rockin' in Rhythm, Lost In meditation & more. keep in mind
that despite my comments above, these are low quality recordings taken
off early am radio by an early acetate disc recorder. These have been
treated with the Audioprism green pen for sound quality. Masters
Netherlands 011222 & 011321. $9.99
*** Duke Ellington - At Newport - this is the original 1 cd release from
the 1956 concert. Features the classic Diminuendo & Crescendo In Blue
with Paul Gonzalves' solo. There was quite a bit of controversy in 2000
with the 2 cd reissue. In the reissue's booklet, Phil Schaap alleges
that this issue was largely re-recorded in the studio & that the new 2
cd version has the real concert. However, George Avakian who produced
the original recording has called that inaccurate. Either way, if you'd
like to own the version that you're familiar with, here's your chance!
CBS 40587. $6.99
*** Duke Ellington - At the Alhambra (Sealed) - Out of print 1958
concert with A Train, Rockin' In Rhythm, Jeep's Blues, Diminuendo &
Crescendo In Blue, Juniflip, 20's medley, & more. Strong version of the
band includes Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonzalves, Ray Nance & many more. This
is a cutout. Pablo 5313. $8.99 (3)
*** Duke Ellington - Brunswick Era #1 1926-1929 - 16 songs, includes East St
Louis Toodle-O, Black & Tan, Black Beauty, & more. Great music; unfortunately MCA doesn't seem to believe in noise reduction. Out of print. MCA 42325. $6.99
*** Duke Ellington - The Incomparable - Dance Band Days (Sealed UK CD) -
This series features rare radio transcriptions from the big bands. An
Ellington discographer has identified this as an October 4th, 1959
concert from Berlin. I have not seen this show on any other cd.
Includes 12 tracks: Such Sweet Thunder, Rockin' In Rhythm, St. Louis
Blues, Anatomy Of a Murder, Things Ain't What They Used To be, & more.
Prism UK 11. $7.99

still highly recommend it. Features 30's-50's CBS material. Includes the
great original version of It Don't mean A Thing; + In A Sentimental
Mood, Solitude, Caravan, Sophisticated Lady, I Got It bad, Perdido, In A

*** Johnny Hodges - 4 Classic LPs: Castle Rock/In A Mellow Tone/Perdido/
Creamy (Sealed UK 2 cd set) - To the best of my knowledge, all 4 of
these LP's are out of print in the US. First, great music. It's 1951-55
Hodges & with Ellingtonians on much of the 2 cd's; nuff said. The
quality is quite acceptable. These are needle drops (I think that's all
Avid does?), but pretty well done. After purchasing my copy, I
discovered I also already had the Japan Verve cd release of Castle Rock.
Comparing the 2: Both are needle drops (I'm surprised Verve didn't have
a master tape). The Verve is better, but each has different
imperfections: The Verve sounds more natural but has more pops &
crackles. The Avid has virtually no pops, but does have some distortion
& quite a bit of background hiss; which is totally absent on the Japan
Verve. The Avid sounds way better then most budget UK needle drop jazz
reissue companies. 41 songs include Castle Rock, The Jeep is Jumping,
Jeep's Blues, In A Mellow Tone, Solitude, Come Sunday, Blues For Basie,
Rose Room, Ballad medley & more. Avid UK 199922. $15.99
*** Johnny Hodges - Rabbit's Blues (Sealed Germany issue) - 21 track
collection is very similar to a Proper Box cd called Castle Blues. We
suspect this is either late 40's and/or 50's material, but we're not
certain. Includes Sweet Lorraine, Castle Rock, The Jeep Is Jumpin', Day
Dream, Solitude, Wham, Good Queen Bess & more. Past Perfect Silverline
Germany 25743. $7.99 (2)
*** Erich Kunzel & Rochester Pops - Ties & Tails: Duke Ellington & George Gershwin - Classical/Pops interpretations of 3 pieces from each pianist/composer. Includes New World A Comin', Overture To Funny Face, Sophisticated Lady, Gershwin In Hollywood & more. Pro Arte 276. $5.99
